Whitney Thore has faced unique health challenges due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). These challenges have influenced her physical well-being and mental health, including weight issues and emotional struggles.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, often called PCOS, is a common condition that affects many women. It is marked by hormonal imbalances and problems with the ovaries, where tiny cysts form. These cysts can cause symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles.
PCOS can lead to increased levels of male hormones. This hormonal change often causes challenges like hair growth on the face, acne, and even fertility problems.
Diagnosing PCOS usually involves assessing symptoms and hormonal tests. Doctors may also use ultrasound to check the ovaries. Whitney has shared her journey about learning she had PCOS in her twenties, highlighting the importance of awareness and early diagnosis.
One of the significant effects of PCOS is weight gain. Hormonal imbalances can make it hard to lose weight, even with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Whitney has openly talked about experiencing a 100-pound weight gain, which she linked to PCOS.
This struggle with weight often affects mental health. Feelings of frustration and self-consciousness are common among women with PCOS. The condition can lead to anxiety and depression due to physical changes and societal pressures.

Whitney Thore set a significant goal for herself: losing 100 pounds. This goal was not about achieving a specific look but rather improving her overall health and well-being. Her journey began in 2015 when she weighed around 385 pounds, as shared in her show My Big Fat Fabulous Life.
She took small, consistent steps towards her goal. Instead of rushing into extreme diets, Whitney focused on sustainable changes. These included portion control and increasing her physical activity. Her journey was gradual, losing about 50 pounds by 2018. This approach helped her maintain progress and inspired many of her fans to pursue their health goals.
For Whitney, a positive mindset was crucial in her weight loss journey. As a public figure promoting body positivity, she aimed to lead by example. Whitney emphasized the importance of self-love at every size and celebrated her small wins along the way.
Engaging in activities that made her feel good was part of her strategy. Whitney’s program No BS Active, which focuses on accessible fitness, helped her stay motivated and active. Ozempic is a notable example that helps some people manage weight; it is a prescription medicine known for treating type 2 diabetes and has been used off-label for weight loss. While it’s unclear if Whitney ever used such medications, she emphasizes the need for personal choices that suit one’s health needs.
