Following his undergraduate studies at the University of California Los Angeles, Dr. Richland attended medical school at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, graduating at the top of his class, earning the Top Surgery Student award, and being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Alpha Sigma Nu medical honor societies. He went on to complete his plastic surgery training at the University of California at Irvine, one of the nation's most elite and rigorous residency programs, where he became the first and only two-time recipient of the academic achievement award.
